Dr. Raghavan will give a talk on “Circular Bioeconomy in the Food, Energy, and Environment Nexus”
Abstract: Do we consume all the food that we produce? No. Post-harvest losses due to damage, poor storage conditions, rot, pests, and vermin account for 27 to 40% of total global food production. Minimizing post-harvest losses is thus important to ensure food security, the access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food, for a world population that is currently over 7.8 billion. And somehow, this must be achieved in a sustainable manner within the context of climate change, loss of biodiversity, increased demand for fuel, and the projected increase of the global population to 9 billion by 2040… Read more

PEOPLE Seminar on Micro-and Nanoplastics, Dr. Elvis Xu, April 13
Seminar title: From micro- to nanoplastics: what we don’t know but should
Date and time: 1:00-1:50 pm NDT, Wednesday, April 13
Speaker: Dr. Elvis Genbo Xu, University of Southern Denmark
Abstract: The ubiquitous micro-and nanoplastics (MNPs) in the environment is of increasing global concern. These small plastic particles are considered emerging ecological and human health threats but we are facing multifaceted challenges in understanding the environmental fates, biological effects, and impacts of MNPs. In this seminar, Dr. Xu will share his recent findings on the environmental occurrence, exposures, biological effects, and toxicity mechanisms of MNPs, highlighting what is not but should be known to stimulate research in this field.

Spotlight on HQP
Jonah Toth is a M.Sc. candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at McGill University under the co-supervision of Dr. Viviane Yargeau (McGill) and Dr. Vincent Fugère (UQTR). His current research aims to optimize methods for monitoring trace pesticide residues in agriculture-adjacent streams. The project contributes important chemical data to a multidisciplinary research team studying the impacts of agricultural intensification and land use management in the Lac Saint-Pierre floodplain. The simultaneous analysis of pesticide residues in stream waters, sediments, and biofilms represents a rare and ambitious opportunity to monitor pesticide residues in the whole of streams. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Jonah is interested in sustainable agricultural practices that minimize environmental impacts while meeting growing global food demands.
