LEADERS & PEOPLE 2021 Virtual Symposium on Environmental Research and Career Training successfully held on July 20-22, 2021
Our second joint virtual symposium was a successful collaborative event. We proudly hosted one keynote speech, two workshops, two career panels, one Ph.D. seminar, as well as 58 technical presentations by young researchers from 12 institutions in and outside Canada. Congrats to our excellent HQP who won the student presentation awards! Thank you to many students and post-docs who presented on a wide range of topics, our Keynote Speaker, Session Chairs, Career Panelists, Workshop Facilitators, and all of our Volunteers. NORMAN General Assembly Meeting Dec 1-2 (CET) & call for proposals for the Joint
NORMAN General Assembly Meeting this year will take place on 1-2 December 2021 (CET), in person or hybrid to be determined. NORMAN also launches the call for proposals for the Joint Programme of Activities 2022 (NORMAN JPA 2022). Members are welcome to submit proposals for collaborative activities (new or follow-up to previous JPA) with other colleagues from the NORMAN Network. The proposed initiatives will be discussed at the General Assembly meeting and submitted to the vote of the members before approval in the next JPA.

Government of Canada confirms ambitious new greenhouse gas emissions reduction target
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change formally submitted Canada’s enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations, committing Canada to cut its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 40‑45 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. This is Canada’s first emissions reduction target that is enshrined in law under the new Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, which received Royal Assent in June 2021.

Canada launches CLIMAtlantic to help Atlantic Canadians adapt to climate change
An aerial view of the northern coastline of Prince Environment and Climate Change Canada announced $1.65 million in federal funding, over the next three years, to support the launch and operation of a new regional hub for climate services. Based in Sackville, New Brunswick, CLIMAtlantic will serve the four Atlantic provinces. Once fully staffed and operational this fall, CLIMAtlantic will provide accessible, regional, and authoritative climate information, data, tools, and training. This will help businesses, community organizations and governments integrate climate information into decision making.

Ingenium and Fisheries and Oceans Canada aim to empower women and girls in ocean Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation has partnered with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO) to develop an array of inspiring, educational resources in support of gender equity among ocean science careers. This multi-year partnership with Ingenium, DFO, and the CCUNESCO aims to help make women and non-binary persons working in ocean sciences more visible, to promote careers for them, and to celebrate achievements and advocates in the hopes of inspiring young ocean scientists.
