Training at the sea Two at-sea training activities were made available to our researchers and HQP on the vessels (Atlantic Kingfisher and Skandi Vinland) for marine pollution and spill response navigating nearby St. John’s supported by our collaborators from Canadian Coast Guard and Husky Energy. We also supported HQP to conduct field work on the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. These present a unique feature of PEOPLE and we will continue to create more opportunities for our trainees. For example, Dr. B. Chen and a few co-PIs have been working with two new partners, Government of Northwest Territories and Arctic Research Foundation (ARF). ARF, an NGO, operates 5 vessels and supports field trips for research and educational activities in the Arctic region. We are planning to send trainees to do training on the vessel “Nahidik” and conduct sampling/analysis work in the Great Slave Lake-Mackenzie River/Bay region and the coast of Beaufort Sea in every summer in 2021-2026 (summer 2021 rescheduled to 2022 due to COVID). Additional fundings are being sought from NSERC Alliance and Mitacs. |
